Throwback Thursday: The Snuggle is Real

In light of Eduardo's recent bedtime struggles, I thought it would be fitting to share some snaps of me snuggling up in my parents' bed! Here's one of me with my mum and this was actually taken in our home in Baltimore (I must have been about 5 or 6). The second picture is of me with my dad which was taken in my grandparents' house in Ireland. I look younger and my hair is definitely shorter so I would say I'm about 3 or 4 in that one. (See my hair grew REALLY slowly - just like Emilia's!)

These photos just remind me of how much I loved cuddling up in my parents' bed in the mornings. There's something really special about climbing into the middle of the two people you loved the most in the world and the feeling of being safe, warm & happy as a child. Now I'm lucky enough to be able to have that experience again with my two children and I secretly look forward to being woken up by their little hands and feet crawling up into our bed, even if it is often in the very early hours of the morning!

Having said that, I do kind of wish Eduardo would stay in his own bed at least until 6am especially now that I'm farther into my pregnancy and feeling more movement/getting bigger. Our bed has become 10x smaller as a result of my growing size, the addition of Eduardo/Emilia/etc. and my pregnancy pillow also takes up a lot of room! (Hahaha, seriously though it does!) We have tried to be more strict about him coming into our bed at night but sometimes when you're so exhausted having been woken multiple times already, you just give in. These are the moments when sliding Eduardo into bed with you seems like a much easier option than traipsing all the way back to his room again to settle him down. Aaaargh...I know, parenting fail. But then there's also part of me who thinks that maybe he just needs me more right now (senses Mummy's pregnant...is worried about not being the baby anymore...etc. etc.)  and there's nothing wrong with that! Ahh, the never-ending mother's guilt. It hits you hard and probably even more so when you're suffering from lack of sleep!

  1. My 3 year old wanders out of her bed most nights and into ours and it doesn't bother me one little bit, when she's grown up I will yearn for those special moments, let them be little and treasure the snuggles x

  7. I have an almost 3.5 year old daughter and 1.5 year old son. So much you comment on I can identify with. At the end of the day they will not be sleeping in our beds when they are teenagers so for now I enjoy it while I can!

  14. Your mommy intuition seems spot on. And while I don't have my own kids quite yet, I often hear the quote "they are only little once". I hope things do start to get a little easier with Eduardo for the sake of making sure you are comfortable for the remaining months of your pregnancy!

  15. Beautiful pics. My youngest used to climb in our bed regularly. They grow out of it eventually. I've never heard of a teen still squeezing in the middle

  16. Im the same at the moment with my 2 year old. We co slept (and i still night breast feed her) until a few days ago where we have moved her into her big girl bed, she still wakes 2 or 3 times a night, so i sneak in, feed her and try to sneak away, more often ending with my falling asleep in her bed. She loves it!

  19. They are only teeny for a little while, it won't hurt to let Eduardo snuggle in with you guys. Also, Emilia looks so similar to you as a child. She's her mummy's baby for sure! ❤️

  31. I try to tell myself to love the late night snuggles as well because they really do grow so fast! Our oldest is 13, and I already miss when she was little and would creep in the way her brother and sister still do (they're 7 and almost 3). Best of luck to you with your sweet little family! Hugs from Michigan!

  32. Great post! I'm 29 now and I still love staying at my mum and dads house, I sleep like a baby (in my own bed!) something about the security of having them there! You are a fabulous mummy, ignore the haters! Xxx

  35. My boys always came to our bed. I was happy to be there for them und hugh and cuddle them, when they had bad dreams, even though I was sooo very tired the next morning... By the way: Lavinia Ava Faye and Savannah Evangeline Grace would have been the names for my (imagined, 4 boys) girls.

  39. I love this post because I can totally relate. I have a 2 year old and a 2 month old. We struggled with the toddler staying in her bed, but since she knows her little brother is getting nursed and is in mommy's room she wants to join. Too tired to deal sometimes so she gets to join.

  41. Hi Anna,
Loved this post ! I don't have pictures of my parents and I cuddling up in bed but the safe feeling you're talking about is still here ! My dad passed almost three years ago and sometimes when I feel overwhelmed, sad or anxious I still go to my mum's bed to cuddle up until I feel fine again.
Anyway, thank you for sharing this !
    xx

  42. These photos are so cute you look just like Eduardo and your mom kind of looks like emilia I lost my Dad when I was 13 and I know how important those pictures of you and your father are because I cherish the ones of me and my dad too

  43. I'm 18 and I still hop into bed with my mum for a cuddle and cup of tea every morning before school. It's one of the cosiest and most relaxed parts of my days so I totally get Eduardo's reluctance to stay in his own bed :P

  44. My son was like this coming to our bed all the time. What I finally did was tell him he could come if he needed to, but he had to be quiet and lay on the bed beside me. I put a crib mattress down with a pillow and blanket. It worked like a charm!! I would wake up in the morning with him sleeping on the bed. Then slowly he stopped coming. I think partly because he wasn't getting attention at night, but also because he wasn't needing to any longer. These times are hard because they are so tiring plus it induces so much guilt. That is why I found a halfway solution that worked for us. Good luck Anna, you are doing great!!
