Pregnancy Diet (What I Eat!)

Watch my Pregnancy Diet (What I Eat!) video here!

Ever since announcing my pregnancy, I have gotten a TON of questions about my diet & how it's changed, what I'm doing differently etc. etc.  So I thought I'd do a blog post on what I generally eat in a day.  Of course, this varies according to what I'm doing or what's going on that day but if I'm at home this is usually what I'll eat.  Also I just want to put it out there that I am not a nutritionist or dietician, this is just what I have learned throughout my pregnancy and what works for me!

I'm 22 weeks and 4 days pregnant and I have steadily gained weight since the beginning of the 2nd trimester (about 11lbs to date).  So far I have been fortunate enough to have had a very healthy & low-risk pregnancy...my blood pressure, weight, iron levels etc. are always right on track and I do accredit that to having a pretty healthy & balanced lifestyle and diet!  I definitely don't think I am perfect by any means, this is my first pregnancy and I am still learning everyday.  However I do hope to help any of you who are curious or interested in what I've been doing!

Breakfast
This almost never changes!  Breakfast is the exact same as what I ate pre-pregnancy and I like to start off the day healthy so I make sure to eat it every morning!  I always have porridge with almond or soy milk, 1/2 a banana, blueberries & a dash of cinnamon.  I also have 1 cup of black coffee and I take my prenatal vitamin with a glass of water!

Lunch
If I'm at home for lunch, it's almost always the same!  I usually eat a sandwich...which is either of these two varieties: tuna with light mayo and cucumber (12oz of tuna a week is perfectly healthy during pregnancy by the way ;) or a Caprese sandwich with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil & olive oil.  My husband & I currently love The Food Doctor multi-seed & cereal pittas.  They are super healthy and most importantly, wholegrain -- I never buy white bread.

Afternoon Snack
At about 4pm, it's snack time! :)  I always have some sort of fruit for my snack...usually it's an apple (not pictured here because we're out of them!) and something else like cottage cheese, Laughing Cow cheese, whole natural almonds or a yogurt.  If we don't have apples in the house I'll eat any other fruit...kiwis, mandarins, plums...depends what's in season!

Dinner
Dinner is always so varied...it was hard to know what to photograph for this section!  We usually eat dinner at about 7pm and it completely depends on what we have in the fridge or what we're in the mood for.  We definitely eat a lot of veggie stir-fries, with wholegrain rice and we love Quorn chicken style pieces!  Of course being Italian I love pasta...but Jonathan is very fussy so we usually eat either pesto or tortellini with some kind of tomato-based sauce.  I always make sure to throw in baby spinach and some fresh veggies as well, I sneak in what I can whenever he's not watching! ;)  We also eat a lot of fish which isn't pictured here because we ate it last night!

Dessert
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have a sweet tooth and therefore always save room for dessert!  I definitely indulge, I just do so in moderation.  If I'm being "good", I love to snack on regular salted popcorn (it's a wholegrain! ;) when we're watching TV or I just need something to munch on.  Otherwise I might do hot chocolate and cookies or Maltesers for my night-time snack.  It really depends on what I feel like!  If we're out at a restaurant, I do get dessert I just watch it...so for example instead of getting banoffee pie I'll have ice-cream.  It's pretty simple really!

What I Drink
I don't ever buy soft drinks or keep them in the house.  Maybe once a week I'll have a glass of Diet Coke if we're out to dinner but that's it.  Jonathan recently started getting 7Up Free when he was trying to cut down on late-night snacking but I never touch it.  The only thing I really drink is water!

I think that's about it!  I hope this was helpful for you guys and gave you an idea of what I eat daily!  Oh yes, and just a little disclaimer: I listen to my doctor...not what I read on the internet.  If my doctor tells me that one cup of coffee or a serving of soy milk daily is not going to harm my baby, I'll listen to him ;)  Since I first announced my pregnancy people have been telling me what I should & should not do.  So far I've been going with my maternal instinct as my doctor calls it, and that seems to be working pretty well for me ;)

Stay Stylish!
