Date Day

Throughout all the craziness that's happened over these past few years, the one thing that has remained constant and which I can always rely on is my relationship with Jonathan. Unfortunately it's also something I often take for granted. I recently realised that as much as we have the luxury of jobs that allow us to spend a lot of time together, we don't tend to make time for each other without the children unless it's something work related. And while our relationship is strong a marriage takes work and it's important to me that we look after it so we can be the best parents possible to Emilia & Eduardo! So we've decided to make a conscious effort to organise a weekly "date night" or in today's case "date day" where we don't talk about work and do something nice for the two of us.

Today's date actually exceeded all of my expectations! I had anticipated maybe going for a meal in our local town (I'm a simple girl!) but after showing Jonathan an Instagram pic of the kind of amazing deliciousness that is a s'mores milkshake, he suggested Bluewater which is home to the red velvet Lola's Cupcake shake - my all-time favourite treat! The excitement nearly kept me up all night...I couldn't wait to go! We decided to beat rush-hour traffic and go during the day when it's quieter...hence the "date day" was born! Here's what I wore on our lunchtime date - a pretty simple outfit which is nothing you haven't all seen before! The blue shirt is an old Tommy Hilfiger one, my jeans are beaten up €5 ones from a Zara sale rack, the pink bow flats are from ASOS about 4 years ago and my pashmina was from a stall in Sorrento. My bag is by Chloé (my 21st birthday present from Jonathan ;)

Bluewater has a huge selection of restaurants but we finally decided on Jamie's Italian for lunch as the last time we were at one was probably in Dublin. I went all out and ordered my absolute favourite pasta dish...black squid & mussels spaghetti! Seafood pasta is pretty much all I eat when we're in Sorrento - I am obsessed! This certainly didn't disappoint...the spaghetti was amazing and super filling! So much so that I passed on dessert (totally unlike me) and didn't even feel like my cupcake shake! Instead we opted to do some retail therapy which mostly involved spending a ridiculous amount of time in toy shops picking out presents for our kids, Jonathan trying on and subsequently falling in love with the Apple watch (I still don't get it) and me filling the void in my heart after finishing up with breastfeeding by buying 12,000 push-up bras.

Here is some of the damage that was done today! As you can see it was a very pink haul...poor Jonathan! This is minus the kids' toys of course...but I did pick up a little flannel beach dress for Emilia from Juicy Couture which I thought would be so cute over her swimsuits this summer! I also got a set of hot pink heart print pyjamas which were on sale. From Victoria's Secret PINK I did pick up some bras as I'm in dire need of new (smaller...*SOB*) ones! And one boring pair of white undies. The bras are all from the Push-Up range and I got four "The Date" ones (in black, grey, indigo and berry) as well as one plain "Wear Everywhere" white one.

There was one more major, unexpected and very exciting thing we did today that I haven't mentioned yet because it's not the right time BUT I will tell you about it soon ;)

Meanwhile back at the zoo...here's what this monkey was getting up to! I swear to god, my children could not be anymore different! Emilia would never do anything this crazy but this ladies and gentlemen is little Eduardo Jonathan...professional furniture climber and the sole reason for which I will most likely go grey in my late twenties.

All jokes aside, today was pretty amazing and we both came home feeling refreshed, renewed and even more in love. I highly recommend setting aside some quality time for each other every week especially if you have kids! Life can get stressful, crazy and sometimes you end up taking out your daily frustrations on the very person you are closest to. So it's important to give your relationship a little TLC to remind yourselves why you got together in the first place! Let me know what you think of date night/days. Do you have them and if so, do they make a difference to your relationship?

  1. It sounds like you guys had so much fun ***so excited to find out what else you got up to*** but my husband and I do date days, we both feel its important after 10 years together, we don't have kids yet (do two dogs count?), but after such a long time together we can sometimes get stuck in the rat race of life, so it's completely needed at the end of the week.

Beautiful haul and you both deserved it, because you both work very hard on a daily basis and this is your reward :)
And no worries about Eduardo, it's normal for boys to climb and explore around ....
And to both you and your hubby: you guys made parenting cool again ! <3

  20. What a lovely post! Your outfit looks gorgeous and I'm glad you & Jonathan had a nice day out.
I think date days/nights are great, me and my boyfriend have a few a month and we generally like to go to the Harvester restaurant for them! They definitely do make a good difference. I can't wait to hear about the major exciting thing you did!

  21. I think dates are so important, just because I find you end up taking each other for granted. God only knows how many sleepless nights we've had since we had Emily which ended up with us snapping at each other. We love going out for meals together. Sometimes walks around the country park while Emily is napping. I have terrible anxiety and find it to hard to even think about leaving her yet. I'm sure that will change with time. Lovely blog post, and so nice to see you both so happy. Xx

  22. I'm so happy you got to go on a date! You guys are such wonderful parents that I look up to, which is how I stumbled upon your website and then later the blogs. I have been watching your videos from before emilia was born and I think I've only seen you guys go on a handful of dates, maybe even some where work related actually. But what I'm trying to say is, I think it's amazing how much you guys care for your kids so much. You've dedicated over two years of really spending quality time with them which I've always read the first three years are so important for children. You deserve "date day" and many more to come!

  23. ab post Anna, love reading your blog but reading about your day with Jofus is just lovely! It's so nice to hear your marriage is going so well, obviously we don't see it all on YouTube but you really are the perfect couple! Your family is amazing and I'm so proud of what you've achieved as a whole unit! I can only dream that I can create a family like this someday. \
Can't wait to hear what you seem to be keeping from us too! Your tweet was suspicious I think it must be related ;) please don't keep us hanging too long!

  26. My boyfriend and I have been together just over 6 years and now that we're living together, we have quantity time together, but not necessarily quality time so we try to make an effort to do something outside of our normal routine to enjoy each other. I agree that it's so important! We're not married yet but I think once you start living together you can easily get into a routine and forget to enjoy each other. Glad you too had a good day, you deserve adult time!

  27. Loved reading this new post! My boyfriend and I definitely agree on having day/night dates. As long as the regular days are left unnoticed, it gives us something to plan and look forward to among work and other mundane things. We always try to do something new or a bit different, and fun, and it makes us want to document our time together, which we love reflecting on. You don't need to spend heaps to have a good time, either! Love your blog Anna :) x

  28. Thrilled to see you're blogging again! Enjoyed getting a glimpse into your sweet relationship with your husband. I'm a mama to 3 little people and I understand how easy it is to take your marriage for granted when life gets crazy. Also, wanted you to know that your blogs help me so much with makeup and fashion. I stay at home with my kids, which makes it hard to know "what's in" at any given moment. I feel like since you're a mom as well you can really give me the direction I need! :)

  30. So important to get away from the daily routine for a day or weekend, even if the kiddos tag along with you. It refreshes you, you enjoy each other a little more, keeps life from feeling boring. I'll admit I had a hard time doing that when my now 4 year old and 3 year old were newborns. But you can't be good happy parents if your marriage isn't in a good happy place.

  31. I really needed this post, I have a 5 month old and am finding it really hard how to go from mummy to fiancée. I'm so focused on my mummy duties I don't know how to go back to being just Amie. I think date day is a great idea and something I will be implementing asap!

  32. After 3 children close together in age and recently moving from the uk to Nz reading your blog has made me take note that my Hubby and i haven't had time with just each other since my little girl was born 10months ago and now my day feeds are dropping :( i might arrange a sitter and hubby a day off work to have a "date day" as evenings are impossible
life just gets in the way sometimes with children, routines housework etc its good for parents to take a step back and a little time out for each other and actually hold hands :) (even though probably like us you spent the whole day talking about the children)
Thanks Anna for the idea of Date day

  41. Looks like the perfect date day ^^ I'm happy you and Jofee decided to do this! Quality time with your loved one is sooo important to me as well. Whenever I get to spend some 'special time' with my boyfriend it just makes me feel so much better, and also reassured about our relationship. Because sometimes, when you're in a long-distance relationship like me (I only see my boyfriend in weekends and sometimes I can't see him for weeks in a row) doubts can rise about whether I should continue the relationship or not. But then I realise that he is also my best friend and that is not worth giving up!

Secondly, I believe it was two days ago in a vlog, the two of you just started hugging it out. It was really touching and the love you have for each was so evident. The world really needs to see more couples like you in for the long run and making it work. It's beautiful, and so many take marriage as a joke now a days. Glad you were able to spend some time together. <3

  52. Hi Anna, loving blog as aways I don't usually comment but I love your family so much amd watch all your daily vlogs.

Well date night/day seem like it is definitely needed in a relationship even though I am saving myself to someone special (god knows when I will actually get the man of my dreams). Anyways the whole point of date day or night is anyone can say they don't have time but everyone should make time for their love ones no matter how busy they may be and that would make a difference in your relationship.

Serious talk aside, just want to say to everyone even of your with someone or not. It is important to be happy even if you are going through something bad in life smile and think of the good memories instead of the bad days.

  53. Date nights are so important! My husband works from home three days a week so even though I see him frequently, we have to plan that special, one on one time together. We have a standing sitter that comes once or twice a month so we can enjoy dinner, movie or just drinks as adults. In fact, I just wrote a blog post about how awesome my husband is too!

Oh, and those bras are cute. You are making me want to freshen up my unmentionables. I don't think my husband would mind. ;)
